COMMEMORATIVE medals were handed out to Colerne Primary School pupils on Friday (June 10) to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

Courtesy of the parish council, schoolchildren received their medals whilst dressed in red, white and blue as well as enjoying a street party at the school.

Residents and fellow 90-year-olds Joy Rees, who has three great-grandchildren at the school, and Gwynne Price, whose wife was a former teacher there, handed out the medals at 12 noon.

Rob Parsons, Headteacher of Colerne Primary School said: “We really enjoyed marking the Queen’s special birthday with our own 90-year-old guests.

"We are delighted that the children each received a commemorative medal so that they can remember this special day. We kept it a surprise for the kids about the medals, they thought they were brilliant.

"The parish council approached us as we were sorting the preparations for our street party and we are delighted that they did, it is a really nice touch.

"It is also very apt that our guests have such close links with the school. There was quite a cross section of the community who came out which was lovely."

The 239 Tower mint golden medals, which cost the parish council of £630, were given to each and every pupil, much to their delight.

Jacqui Bradburn, Chair of Colerne Parish Council said: “We are so pleased that two of our 90-year-old parishioners were able to present the children of Colerne Primary School with birthday medals.

"We are also delighted to fund these souvenirs of the Queen’s special birthday.”
