A CHILDREN'S ward in Bath is now £905 better off thanks to the fundraising efforts of a seven-year-old from Corsham.

Archie Enstone organised a charity sports day at Corsham Rugby Club back in April and last Thursday (June 2) he handed over the cheque to Bath's Children Centre - six months after the hospital treated him to help him recover from a severe bacterial infection.

After his recovery he spent four months thinking of ways to repay staff - before settling on the sports day with 32 of his friends - who helped make him better.

Archie, of Macie Drive and a Corsham Primary School pupil, said: “I organised it mostly all by myself. I am really happy we raised so much for the hospital. I am really chuffed.

"I was so so happy to raise that much for them. I did not expect to get that at all, it was very surprising but great."

"When I am older I would love to be a doctor so I can help others, just like the doctors who helped me.”

Ward sister Mary McDonagh said: “This is a fantastic effort by Archie and his friends and we’re really grateful. We’re so glad he’s made a full recovery and has done so much to raise this money.”

It was agreed with Archie, who was rushed to Bath's Royal United Hospital in December where he had to have brain scans and lumbar punctures for suspected meningitis, that the money would go towards the £6000 cost of a new sophisticated monitor for the children’s ward.

His parents Robin, 38, and Jen Enstone, 37, were delighted with their son's achievements.

"We are so proud of him. To raise over £900 is a wonderful achievement," said Mr Enstone.

"Archie was desperate to give it to them in person and he thoroughly enjoyed meeting some doctors and nurses which was great.

"He got a little bit emotional in raising that amount for them, it was a fantastic moment and rightly so he was thrilled to bits."

The sports day involved baseball, cricket, hurdles, javelin and races among other events as well as selling cakes and drinks for the hospital.
