THE future of the Colerne Constitutional Club is now secure after a frantic search to find a club treasurer and secretary.

On Saturday (May 21), an extra-ordinary general meeting was held to ensure that the club did not cease trading and to fill the two vital roles.

The club, which has been open since the 1890s, was facing an uncertain future after no names were put forward for the two positions at the AGM on April 5.

President Bob Atter said on Tuesday that the two roles had been filled and much to his relief the club will remain open.

“It is a real sense of relief for all of us on the committee. It would have greatly impacted the village and not for the better if it closed,” said Mr Atter, who has been a committee member for more than 45 years.

“People did not realise how close it was to closing but luckily that has been averted and I am very happy.

“It would essentially be illegal to run it without them. It was very worrying. The club is a very important asset to Colerne and now we are back to a full committee we can move on from this, thankfully.”

The venue provides live music, bingo, skittles, pool, darts, cribbage plus various activities and events.

Mr Atter wrote an appeal in the Colerne Parish Magazine’s latest issue calling for as much support as possible to enable the club to continue. He says it provides the village and club members with unrivalled facilities.

“A lot goes on at the club and if it did close it would have been very disappointing but it was good to have around 40 people show up to the meeting,” said Mr Atter.

“This club is steeped in history. It has been going since 1936 but we have documents saying it went all the way back to the 1890s.

“Thankfully we can now look forward to a busy summer schedule of skittles, events, birthdays, music and much more.

“Three new young committee members have recently joined too and that can only help to ensure the club’s future which is an added bonus.”
