FROM pint-sized puppies to giant St Bernards, all pooches great and small flocked to Corsham to compete in a novelty dog contest on Saturday.

Nearly 100 pets took part and were entered into the ten categories by their owners, from most appealing eyes, golden oldie and scruffiest dog. The most popular categories were prettiest bitch and most handsome dog.

All the animals came under the watchful eye of judge Pam Russell and the winners were rewarded with rosettes.

This year’s event also saw a new category of best trick with dogs balancing treats on their noses and jumping through hoops – taking inspiration from pooch Matisse, who won this year’s Britain’s Got Talent.

The event was organised by the Chippenham and Corsham branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind, and after paying for the rosettes the charity raised £60 with more donations being collected at its stall.

Janet Smith, who along with Janice Boswell established the charity branch, said: “It was a family fun dog show, so we were looking for the fun aspect.

“They thought it was well organised, it was a very friendly show and had some interesting categories and they were pleased to enter it.”

The show was also part of the St Bartholomew’s Church summer fete, so while the dogs were relaxing in the sun, their owners enjoyed a variety of stalls. There was also entertainment, live music and classic cars on display.
