A EUROVISION theme, wife carrying contest and tug-of-war were all part of the fun at the annual Box Revels event on Bank Holiday Monday.

Villagers came out in their numbers to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the atmosphere of the jam-packed day, raising money for community projects.

In tribute to the 60th Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Austria on Saturday, residents also dressed to impress; donning their best frocks and outfits resembling past Eurovision contestants from all over the world, including – Scooch, who represented the UK in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Carrying on from the theme, there was also a play Eur cards right game and music from the five ladies of band Mother Pluckers, who played their ukuleles alongside youngster Kyle on guitar on the main stage.

A variety of stalls selling plants to baked treats were also on offer at the recreation ground and archaeological finds from Old Jockey Farm in Box were displayed.

The highlight of the day was the Finnish inspired wife-carrying competition which was won by Sophie Dutton and her husband known as ‘Legs’. Children also got involved by spraying the contestants with water guns.

The whole fundraising weekend began on Saturday night with a banquet at Selwyn Hall, which saw around 150 people turn-up. Throughout the weekend there was also a treasure hunt, car boot sale, dog show and inter-pub cricket matches and up to 1,000 people attended Box Revels on Monday.

Committee member Kirsty Lockwood said: “It had a really sunny, happy and busy atmosphere. I’ve got quotes from people saying it was the best set-up and year so far.

“We raised well over £2,000 for local causes but essentially it is an opportunity for the community to get together and have fun and is truly a village event, run by the village for the village."
