PUPILS at Springfields Academy spent two days broadening their range of transferable skills with local employers last week as part of National Careers Week.

The academy for children who experience complex learning, emotional, social and behavioural difficulties welcomed the likes of Bath Rugby and Wiltshire College onto campus while some pupils went on trips to Mercedes Benz World or the National History Museum in London.

Creative students worked with street artist Stuart Taylor while budding engineers took on activities provided by Dyson.

Becky Deacon, Head of Able, Gifted and Talented at the academy said: “I think what they have really enjoyed is that it’s targeted to them, looking at what they are good at and what their skills are.

“It’s about making them realise that just because we love something does not meant that’s what we are going to do its about having a broad base of skills.

“There’s something for everyone, it’s been a great week and a great platform, and they’ve loved it.”

The week offered a new and different challenge to what many of the pupils are used to and acting principal Jon Hamp was delighted with their response.

He said: “What the Springfield Academy is about is preparing them for their future and that does involving challenging them and putting them in new challenges but they have coped brilliantly.

“A lot of very very brave children have taken a big step and we are delighted with how it’s gone.”
