CORSHAM Regis Primary Academy has been selected to represent the Chippenham constituency in a parliamentary project.

Year six pupils from the school have been asked to design a flag on behalf of the community as part of a project called Parliament in the Making, which 650 other schools are also taking part in.

All the designs will be displayed in an online exhibition and a number of them will be stitched together to form a large flag to flat at a special event in Parliament Square.

It is hoped it will connect young people with the democratic process and heritage and is celebrating two historic anniversaries.

They include the 800th year of the sealing of the Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort parliament, where elected representatives of the shires and the boroughs came together for the first time.

“It was a great privilege to be chosen as one of the schools selected for this unique project,” said Pam Gregory, acting deputy head teacher.

"We enjoyed the democratic process whereby all our designs were put on show for both our class and staff to cast their votes in favour of the best design. Once the colours and symbols were agreed, another stage of design took place, resulting in a further round of votes before the overall winner was unanimously declared."

The primary school was invited to take part in the competition by Parliament as they had entered in a competition run by the House of Commons called the Speaker’s School Council Awards in 2014.

Pupil Renna Hechanova, whose design was voted best, said: “It was a privilege to enter the competition. We had lots of fun deciding the flag which we put through as our entry. Representing Corsham and Chippenham is a real honour.”
