Corsham Area Heritage Group chairman Peter Tapscott is so frustrated with the lack of help from members that he has warned he will leave if the situation does not improve.

For four years, the group – based at Arnold House in the High Street – has been sharing and preserving the history of the town.

Members research its heritage, organise talks and archive documents for the community.

They also engage in projects and stage regular exhibitions at the Springfield Community Campus, including images of the town’s involvement with war.

However, Mr Tapscott feels this work is now being left to a handful of people and, if the situation does not change, next week he and six other members will walk away indefinitely, leaving the group in jeopardy.

The ultimatum is to see “new blood” or existing members come with ideas and efforts to the annual general meeting on Wednesday.

He said: “Too much is being left to too few. We’re not short of cash. We’re short of people who have the enthusiasm to identify how to spend it and ability and interest to make those things happen.

“Without that light at the end of the tunnel, the present CAH team has collectively decided that it is prepared to throw in the towel.

“It is better to end it all now than to struggle on, increasingly frustrated and lacking in satisfaction. None of its management committee members are prepared to offer themselves for re-election.”

At the moment there are 50 people who pay a membership fee and Mr Tapscott wants to see everyone contribute their time and help. He and the other stalwarts are also more than happy to teach new members the ropes.

The group’s future will be discussed at the annual general meeting at Arnold House, 31 High Street, on Wednesday at 2pm. Anyone with an interest in the group, or who would like to join, is being urged to attend.
