Lacock Abbey is set to become the home of Wiltshire-based artist Jill Carter and her Curious Narratives project from tomorrow until Friday, September 19.

Drawing inspiration from the abbey’s rich history, Jill will be creating drawings, textiles, and natural artwork.

Her work will be created on site and will be found around the grounds and in her wooden hut, which will also act as a large camera obscura.

Visitors will be encouraged engage with Jill as she works, respond to her findings, offer their own ideas, and help with photo documenting.

They will also be able to visit her portable hermitage to see the ever changing project unfold during the week.

Jill said: “I love the peace and tranquillity and spirit of place.

"I have visited Lacock Abbey many times, imagined the women who once lived the contemplative life, where silence, stillness and meditation would have been their world.”

Kristine Heuser, of the National Trust, said: “Jill’s art has a gentle, quiet approach that draws you in and allows you to engage as much or as little as you like.

"There is a history of strong women living at the abbey, from Ela of Salisbury, first abbess, to the nuns, and the female members of the Sharington and Talbot family.

"We are really excited to see the curious outcomes of Jill’s time here, inspired by our history.”

The project will go on tour after the residency with workshops and an exhibition. Visit www.jillcarterart.com for more details.
