A community group in Corsham that has saved hundreds of bikes from the scrapheap is under threat itself, unless it can find a new home.

The Spindles and Sprockets Bike Project meets every Saturday morning at Corsham Community Centre, where it provides maintenance and repair services to local cyclists.

After moving from The Pound Arts Centre, where it was founded five years ago, it will have to relocate again by May 14, as the Community Centre is being demolished to make way for the new Corsham Campus.

Co-founder Richard Moulton said: “We always knew we didn’t have a place at the new community centre when we moved, and now we are desperately looking for a new place.

“We have a fully kitted out workshop with an array of tools and work benches, but it may be we have to store the equipment and spares in a garage until we can find somewhere permanent.

“It became a social focal point for local cyclists – from serious lycra-clad sports riders, stopping for coffee and pit stop repairs, to local school children needing a BMX puncture fixed.

“The Saturday morning workshop was a year-round success.”

The project is not for profit and is open to anyone wishing to learn more about bicycle mechanics.

Fellow founder Edgar Stringer said: “We thought Corsham could do with a bike shop to stop bikes being abandoned.

“We need to be able to get in on Saturday mornings, and we need a certain amount of storage and a workshop, which could be any kind of room the size of a double garage where we can store the parts. If we didn’t find somewhere new we would try and carry on doing what we do, but it would be a great shame if it was lost.”
