Corsham’s greenest fingers were honoured this week as the winners of the annual Corsham in Bloom competition were announced.

The annual contest is organised by the town council, with prizes awarded for the best school, sports club and public house.

Council officer Sharon Thomas said: “This year was very good. They are always strongly contested, but the most competitive category was the best public house, social club or eating place, where there were only five marks between the top three, with the Methuen Arms coming out on top.

“Some people found it quite difficult this year with the weather, but they were still fantastic.”

Rodney and Maureen Cundict were double winners this year, scooping the top prize for their allotment and second for their front garden at Ludmead Road.

Mr Cundict, 67, said: “We love growing vegetables and flowers, and since I retired two years ago it’s got even better.

“We like to put in new perennials every year, and we had a lot of dahlias. At the allotment it has been a difficult year; some things are good like celery, leeks and onions, but the runner beans are poor this year, because we are not getting the rain when we need it.

“There’s a lot of demand for the allotment plots in the town. When a new one comes up now they are cutting it in half it’s so popular, and there are a lot of younger people wanting to get involved.”

The commercial premises award went to H Merrett Funeral Directors, on Pickwick Road.

Director Aaron Bewley said: “Last year we got silver and the year before that we won it, so it’s something we take a lot of pride in. My mother is the horticulturalist of the family, so she looks after it every year.

“We take pride in our business and in Corsham, so it’s important for us to make sure we do our bit.”
