River bursts bank at Chippenham

The River Avon in Chippenham has flooded, submerging footpaths and even part of the graffiti wall under the Gladstone Road bridge, following the weekend's heavy rain.

However, a spokesperson from the Environment Agency said there is nothing to worry about.

“It’s not unusual for the river to look as if it might have burst its banks, because they often spread out across the flood plains adjacent which are on low-level land,” he said.

“The river will eventually draw back. The advice would be to steer clear, let it dry out and wait until the river goes back to a normal level.”
