10:01am Friday 17th February 2012 in Chippenham By Alex Winter
A Chippenham tradition will continue on Tuesday as pancake-wielding runners take to the High Street.
The pancake races will start at 11am outside the town hall, with events for adults and children, including a town council fancy dress category. Entry is free, but participants need to provide their own pancakes and a frying pan.
Emma King, tourism manager, said the event had already received a good number of entrants, but more were welcome.
She said: “The pancake race is one of the most popular annual events in Chippenham and always well supported.
“It is lots of fun and this year will be no exception.”
Musician Martin Smith will be on hand to entertain the crowd between races.
The town mayor, Coun David Powell, will start the races from the town hall steps and present the prizes.
Coun Maureen Lloyd and her colleagues from The Autumn Travellers’ Club of Chippenham will be making and selling pancakes in the town hall during the event.
Winners will receive a much-coveted engraved frying pan, and those in second place will be presented with a jar of maple syrup. All those entering receive a lemon, donated by SK Fruits in the town, and there will be special prizes for the children.
Entry forms are available from the Community and Visitor Information Centre in the High Street or by emailing communityinformation @chippenham.gov.uk
