Early birds launch new Chippenham group

A NEW Rotary Club has been formed which meets at 7.30am for breakfast each Tuesday.

The early risers are part of the new Rotary Club of Chippenham Larkrise, named because they’ll be up with birds.

The club was officially chartered at a special dinner on June 27 at the Manor House Golf Club in Castle Combe.

Over a hundred Rotarians and friends dined together with the President of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland, Ian Thomson.

The Larkrise Club received gifts of regalia and other Rotary items from other clubs in the district including a babies bottle from the Weymouth Harbourside Club.

It is a tradition in the district that the newest club keeps possession of the bottle and then passes it on when another new club is formed.

Mostly in their thirties and forties, the new Rotarians are of both sexes with a very wide range of occupations from painting and decorating to osteopathy. In his inaugural speech President of the new club, Andrew Thomson, said he was looking forward to building the membership and living up to the Rotary ideal of service above self.

A Rotary Club is not chartered until it has 20 committed members and makes an application to Rotary International.

There are now three clubs in Chippenham meeting separately for breakfast, lunch, and evening meal. All three clubs are seeking new members.
