Staff in the Blockbuster video store in Chippenham were confronted by a man brandishing what they believed to be a syringe as he stole DVD's.

The incident took place on Sunday just after before 12.30pm when the 36-year-old man went into the shop in the Hathaway Retail Park and started to put DVD's inside his jacket.

Staff then approached the man when they realised what he was doing and he said he would stab them if they got any closer.

He then brandished a sharp object they believed to have either been a syringe or a small knife before running out of the store.

Sergeant Lee Armit, head of the Chippenham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This was a serious incident and we would always advise people to put their own safety first.

"This man was arrested and has been released on police bail."

Anyone with information on this incident should contact Chippenham Police on 0845 408 7000, or anonymously, on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
