Castle Combe Circuit worker remains in coma

The wife of Castle Combe Circuit maintenance man David Johnson, who was left with serious head injuries after an accident at the racing track, has thanked hospital staff for their support.

Angela Johnson, of Chippenham, has kept vigil by her husband’s bedside for more than a month after he was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

He fell from a lorry while working on the track where he has been a maintenance man for more than 20 years.

Mr Johnson has shown signs of improvement since the accident on November 11 and has now been transferred to the Royal United Hospital in Bath. But he remains in a coma.

Mrs Johnson said: “David has improved since the accident but he still has a long way to go.

“He has been able to open his eyes and make slight movements, however, he is still in a coma and his condition can change by the hour.

“I have had such great support from everyone during this time and cannot thank my family, friends and work colleagues enough.

“I want to especially thank the nurses and doctors who have been looking after David both in Frenchay Hospital and at the Royal United Hospital.

“They are out of this world.

“They not only look after patients but they look after relatives as well. They try and keep my spirits up and give me updates every hour.

“You don’t realise how much they do for people in hospitals until something like this happens to someone you love.”

She said that her husband had been moved as he no longer needs the 24 hour care that he was receiving at Frenchay in the high dependency unit and is now closer to a rehabilitation unit.
