THE war cries of an Anglo-Saxon warrior echoed through the corridors of Langley Fitzurse Primary School last week, as the bearded fighter taught pupils about his lifestyle, society and weaponry.

Pupils from the school's Chameleon Class, which is comprised of Year 5 and 6 pupils, met Hereward, the re-enactor, as part of their immersive history lessons before the half-term break last Wednesday.

Tales of Anglo-Saxon life, together with stories of trading with the Middle East and hands on experience with swords, shields and other weaponry used by fighters to expel the Danes during the 5th century, were shared with the pupils as a conclusion to their history lessons.

"It was certainly a day to remember," Liz Howe of Langley Fitzurse Primary School said. "Dressed up as Anglo-Saxons, they participated in activities such as a shield-war enactment; hands on primary artefacts; travelling to the middle-east to trade; a story of Beowulf and a mini- staging of an Anglo-Saxon funeral."

In the afternoon, pupils shared their dramatisation of a Anglo-Saxon punishment called trial by ordeal, where the guilt or innocence of the accused would be determined by subjecting them to a painful experience, such as trail by combat, fire or water.

"To complete the afternoon, Year 6 entertained Hereward with a special performance on Anglo-Saxon punishment known as the Ordeals, which they previously shared with their parents during their class assembly last Wednesday," Ms Howe added.
