A SHELDON School pupil has been named as the runner up in a prestigious photography competition for snapping the moment a woman talked to two armed soldiers shortly after a horrific terrorist attack in Barcelona last year.

Sean Watson's picture went on display at the Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch, London, after he came runner-up in the society in chaos category of the Economic and Social Research Council's The Bigger Picture campaign last week.

The 17-year-old beat more than 500 images sent in by 75 schools from around the country, all focusing on how the world around them is changing and affecting communities as a whole.

"I was very surprised and humbled when I heard that I had been chosen to receive this prestigious award," Sean said. "I think the reason my photo was chosen is because it represents the society we live in and was taken in an impactful period of time.

"It was inspiring seeing my photograph on display in a gallery and was an experience to remember."

The photographic competition, which is in its fourth year, awarded more than £3,800 to the winners, with prizes divided into five categories. In addition to the categories, the judges were also asked to pick their personal favourites, with the winners receiving £50 in vouchers.

Art teacher Konstantina Paroussi said: "We are very proud of Sean's achievement. His photograph is rich with symbolism and an intelligent reading of the society in chaos theme.

"We always encourage our students to take part in competitions and hope that Sean's achievement will inspire his peers and younger students."
