DISABLED parishioners planning to attend Easter services at Central Methodist Church in Chippenham will be able to park on double yellow lines, the council have confirmed.

Reverand David Gray raised his concerns with Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police following the closure of Monkton Hill car park.

"One of my parishioners tried to get to a service last night but as the police cars were parked all the way up the hill and on double yellow lines, there was nowhere for her to park," he said.

However, Wiltshire Police has now confirmed that it will try to park further up the hill to cause minimum disruption to the services.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: "We have spoken to the Reverend to look at alternative options while the essential repair work of the car park goes ahead. We will be allowing churchgoers with a blue badge to park on the double yellow lines on Monkton Hill and offering them the use of the Bridge Centre roundabout car park over the weekend.

"They will need to share the double yellow spaces with emergency service vehicles however, and we hope this will be a solution that works well for those wishing to attend Easter church services.”

A spokesman from Wiltshire Police added: "“We understand the area is likely to be busy this weekend as people attend the Easter church services and we have been in contact with Wiltshire Council.

"There will be times where the double yellow spaces may need to be shared with our police cars. We hope this will not affect services."
