A HARDENHUISH School pupil made her voice heard during a debating competition organised by the Historical Association.

Maya Skelton, who is in Year 12 at the Chippenham school, took part in the association’s Great Debate Competition last month, beating several other schools in the south west regional heat.

The Great Debate encourages sixth form pupils with an interest in history to engage in a five-minute historical debate by answering this year’s question: Was the 1918 extension of the franchise the most significant moment in British democratic history?

Mr Philip Arkinstall, curriculum leader for history and Maya’s history teacher, said: “Maya had to present in front of a large audience and took questions expertly.

“She represented the school wonderfully and I am delighted that she has made it to the grand final.”

This year’s competition is being held in partnership with the UK parliament’s Vote 100 project, meaning the sixth former will travel to the Houses of Parliament on March 10 for the final.
