THE Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police has paid tribute to a former Chippenham police officer who died suddenly over the weekend.

Paul McQuillan, who lived in Melksham, passed away after playing a rugby match for Melksham RFC second team at Marlborough on Saturday.

The 41-year-old, who leaves behind his partner Michelle and two children, joined the Force in March 2008.

He worked in a number of uniform roles, predominantly as Community Beat Manager in Chippenham, before leaving last summer to join Network Rail in Swindon.

Chief Constable Mike Veale paid tribute to Paul and sent his condolences to his family, saying: "My thoughts, prayers and sincerest condolences are with Michelle and their children at what must be a truly horrific time.

"Paul was a keen and talented rugby player and it is bittersweet that his passing was in the pursuit of one his life’s passions.

"As a rugby man myself I know that it is a sport that shares a lot of traits with policing. It requires tenacity, skill and teamwork. It is underpinned by honour, respect for your fellow human beings and unbreakable camaraderie.

"It’s therefore fitting that Paul was described by his beloved Melksham RFC as a ‘true gent’ and ‘an asset to the club and the game’. This speaks volumes about Paul and is a true testament to his character."

In a message on its website, Melksham RFC said: “It is with great sadness the club has to announce the passing of Paul McQuillan.

“Paul passed away after the 2nd team game against Alfred’s Nomads which took place in Marlborough. All of our thoughts are with Michelle and all of his family at this difficult time.

“Paul was a great man to play alongside and a true asset to the club and the game. His sense of fun and warm smile will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Michelle said: “Paul was a true gent who never had a bad word to say about anyone. Always had a smile on his face, he will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.”

It is understood that Mr McQuillan, who played front row prop, had asked to come off the pitch 20 minutes before the end of the game, complaining that he felt cold and tired.

It is understood he was found collapsed in the changing room by team-mates who tried to resuscitate him.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance was called out but Mr McQuillan died before the paramedics could airlift him to hospital in Swindon.

The family have asked for donations to Melksham RFC so they can purchase a defibrillator for the club’s new Oakfields Stadium which was officially opened in October.
