TWO events in Chippenham to support the Wiltshire charity, Help for Heroes, have raised more than £700.

The ‘Mallimania’ big fight night and family-orientated ‘Wurzelmania’ events were held at Monkton Park on Saturday and Sunday July 8 and 9. They attracted more than 1,000 people over the two days and featured kickboxing and boxing bouts on the Saturday and a live music on Sunday.

Somerset folk legends, The Wurzels, headlined the bill at the Sunday fun day and were supported by Bristol-based Nuttyness, one of the country’s finest Madness tribute groups.

The events were organised by Spartan Gym co-owner, Carl Mallinson and raised a total of £722.21 for Help for Heroes, which will be presented to the charity by two former army veterans who fought on the Saturday evening.

Mallimania spokesperson Jackie Thompson said: “There has been a lot of great feedback from the weekend and we are raising a big cheque to present to Help for Heroes. We hope to raise well over £1,000 next year and are already working on the event.

“The format for next year will be a comedy night on the Friday with a top comedian (name to be confirmed) then a sports day on the Saturday. We will be inviting all the sports clubs in Chippenham to do demonstrations to promote themselves, along with amusements.

“The fight night on Saturday will feature a Help for Heroes belt for the soldiers to fight for, then on the Sunday there will be again a family barbecue and fun day with another top band again to be confirmed soon.”
