A Musical Timeline
CLOGS Musical Theatre, Neeld Arts & Community Centre, Chippenham
TRY to Remember, from the Fantasticks, a 1960 musical, was the apt opening number in a memorable Musical Timeline performed by CLOGS Musical Theatre and their well-drilled junior group, the Clogettes, in Chippenham last week.
Audiences did not have to wonder 'Where did I hear that song?' as the names of hit shows were emblazoned on the ever-changing projected backcloth while a magical miscellany of favourite numbers was performed by highly accomplished soloists and chorus. The vibrant timeline was cleverly compiled by creative director Debi Weaver and musical director Peter French.
The production, which featured songs from over 70 years of successful musicals, was a total delight,
A veritable galaxy of shows included Me and My Girl, The King & I, Singin' in the Rain, Kismet, Calamity Jane, Fanny, Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Company, the show that won a Tony award in 1971.
The second half opened with a rousing rendition of Old Red Hills, from Parade, followed by songs from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Seussical, Billy Elliot, Sister Act, The Muppets and The Wizard of Oz . Finally, a song from the 2016 Disney movie, Moana, had another apt title: How Far I'll Go.
Having relished this wonderful evening of fine performances by these highly talented amateurs, who can tell how far they may go? Some seem to have found stardom already, in Chippenham.
Congratulations are due to the entire company. Accompanists were Peter French (piano) and Craig Spensley (drums).
The company are looking for more members for their next production, Kiss Me Kate. There are many male roles in this show, so they especially hope to recruit more men. Anyone interested should contact Anne at anneholmes12@aol.co.uk
