A Wiltshire woman is organising a sponsored walk next weekend to raise funds for the survivors of the Grenfell Tower blaze in London.
Lydia Harris, a carer from Katherine Park in Corsham, went to Kensington five days after the fire to help charities handling donations to the survivors.
Now she has organised a sponsored five-mile walk from the main Co-op store in Corsham to St Anne’s Church, Bowden Hill, in Lacock, on Sunday, 9 July from 10am to 2pm.
Lydia said: “I saw a home-made video of one of the Grenfell Tower residents dancing to Michael Jackson and enjoying themselves and it just broke my heart.
“I decided to go up to London to see if I could help the charities dealing with all the donations. I have been talking to the Reach for Humanity charity who are working with some of the survivors of the fire.”
Since returning to Corsham, Lydia has set up a Facebook page, ‘Sponsored Walk for the Survivors of Grenfell Tower’, and has received pledges of sponsorship from friends, family and other residents.
She is hoping to raise up to £500 from the sponsored walk, which she will be doing with Londoner Derry Charles, to send to London to help the Grenfell Tower survivors to get back on their feet.
She added: "For anyone that wants to come along, donations can be made on the day. I would love everyone to wear something green, but that is optional."
