A FORMER police superintendent who has dedicated his retirement to charity fundraising collected over £300 in the street in Chippenham, bringing his combined total to over £30,000.

Roger Mechan, 70, from Plymouth has close family in Wiltshire and organised a collection for Help for Heroes, which raised £324.

As a retired superintendent, Mr Mechan has worked closely with servicemen and now spends the majority of his spare time doing sponsored events for the charity and his local hospice, St Luke's.

Mr Mechan said: "I feel that when elderly people retire they should still have a purpose in life, and this is mine.

"I have been extremely lucky in my personal life, with such great children and grandchildren that it is nice to be able to give back for as long as my physical abilities allow me to."

Mr Mechan has so far walked over 200 miles across the Pilgrim routes in Spain and France as well 140 miles from Bath Abbey to Westminster.

He is already planning and looking forward to his next walk, and has no plans to hang up his walking boots anytime soon.

He said: "I am looking into doing an 80-mile walk in the Cotswolds next, I will carry on fundraising for as long as my legs allow me to."
