PUPILS from Hardenhuish School in Chippenham put their best foot forward and raced for the line after spending an education day at Bath Racecourse, courtesy of charity Racing to School.

The charity uses a broad interest in horseracing to help develop young people’s learning, and the 24 Year 7 pupils from the Wiltshire school took part in a number activities at the racecourse.

Lesley Peirce, faculty administrator from Hardenhuish School mathematics department, said: “Many of the children who attended have never been to a racecourse before.

“There so much maths involved in racing it shows them how the subject can be used in everyday life, not just the classroom. The kids were all really buzzing after their day.”

Their day last month included a behind-the-scenes look at the venue, including how a jockey’s weight is calculated, dressing up in jockey silks and gaining an insight into a career in the industry.

Jo Hall, executive director of Bath Racecourse, said: “The Racing to School programme is one we wholeheartedly support.

“It is a great way to introduce young people to our industry and is also a fun day out that provides a unique environment to support learning for the students.

“Every year, in partnership with the charity Racing to School, we host school days here at Bath Racecourse and it is something we are very passionate about doing.

“All the pupils have a great time and learn a lot about career opportunities in our industry.

“We thoroughly enjoyed having the Hardenhuish pupils here and I hope that we have inspired them.”
