A CHIPPENHAM care home from which seven residents were removed for their own safety was found to be failing in all areas, the Care Quality Commission has revealed.

Sheldon Lodge Care Home shut in February, only days after a CQC inspection and after they received information about the provider not following up an allegation of abuse.

The home, which cared for people over the age of 65, was found to be inadequate in all areas, including safety, responsiveness and effectiveness, and was closed down immediately.

The CQC has yet to confirm if any further action will be taken against the owners following the publication of the full report.

Deborah Ivanova, the deputy chief inspector for Adult Social Care (London and South) said: “Inspectors visited Sheldon Lodge, in Sheldon Road, Chippenham, on January 31 and February 1 as a result of information of concern raised with us.

“After the inspection Wiltshire County Council took action, moving people from the service to accommodation more appropriate to their needs on February 10.

“The provider has now cancelled their registration for Sheldon Lodge.

“Our first concern is the welfare of the people who have been living at Sheldon Lodge, and we are satisfied that the council acted in conjunction with the provider to ensure their safety.

“CQC are currently in discussion with other stakeholders and is reviewing all the information available regarding Sheldon Lodge.

“We will then consider what further action we will be taking.”

The inspection found that people were not protected from the risk of harm and that there were some staff practices which demonstrated a lack of empathy.

It also found that staff training had fallen behind, as had staff supervision and that there was a lack of activities and meaningful occupation.

Speaking in February following the closure, owner Harry Arithoppah, who ran the home along with his wife Jayne, said they had been planning to retire and close the home at the end of March.

At the time he said: “We’ve been here for 25 years and had a good time, we’ve done our best.

“We gave them an inkling that we were closing and I think everything was done according to plan.

“We couldn’t meet some of the criteria so we said we were going to close.

“We wish all the residents and the staff the best.”
