A SPRING clean at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham has resulted in 650 books being donated to a school in Ghana.
Four pupils from the school’s Green Team collected the old textbooks which are no longer used and they were given to Barbara Angme-Amponsah, who will distribute them to the Kandiga Secondary School in North Eastern Ghana which is based in the village that she lives in.
Changes in school curriculum means that new textbooks are being bought, allowing the old ones to be distributed to students in deprived areas where they have little or no access to valuable teaching resources.
The book collection is another initiative the school has done as they continue their efforts to become sustainable.
Hardenhuish was awarded its second Eco-Schools Green Flag Award at the end of last year and are attempting to instil good habits in its pupils which are followed into the home and community.
Rob Kelland, science teacher at Hardenhuish who oversees the Green Team, said: “This week’s collection of textbooks is the culmination of excellent co-ordination and lots of hard work and perseverance by these pupils.
“I am very proud of them and am sure that the students in Ghana who receive the books will be delighted with them.”
