BUDDING journalists from Hardenhuish School in Chippenham went on the search for news and scandal as they took part in the BBC’s School Report Day.

The annual event, which is in its 11th year, challenges pupils aged 11-16-years-old from across the UK find and produce their own news reports.

Three-thousand pupils from more than 900 schools took part in the event, which included some working in BBC newsrooms and local radio stations.

Year 9 pupils at Hardenhuish School held an editorial meeting before looking for scoops around the school which included hedgerow litter, the shooting of a headmaster in France, mental health and the school’s recent production of Anything Goes.

The team wrote their stories before uploading them to the BBC News School Report website on March 16, with the BBC publishing reports via its interactive map.

Will Elliott, English teacher at Hardenhuish School, said: “I was overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of work that the students produced during the day.

“They were incredibly independent throughout the process, having a very clear idea of what they wanted their end product to be, and getting on with it straight away.”
