A CHIPPENHAM mum-of-three will be get on her bike and pedal more than 200 miles across two countries to raise money for three cancer charities later this year.

Sandra Mathias is taking part in Women v Cancer, a 350km bike ride across Salvador and Brazil and will raise money for Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

The 49-year-old will join 60 other women as they take part in the ride of a lifetime which will take place in October this year, each raising £3,300.

“I’m very nervous but I’m excited as well and it was quite a spontaneous decision,” said Mrs Mathias, who works as a HR clerk.

“I’ve always wanted to do an international charity challenge and everyone knows somebody who has suffered or is suffering from cancer.

“I don’t cycle everyday but I have cycled since I was a child and in some ways it’s a ploy to get fit.

“I think my friends are nervous about, they’re being very quiet but my boys have been really supportive and one of them, Reece, had his hair shaved off and raised £600 through that.

“I’m just starting my training again and I’m aiming to go between two and four times a week.

“I think the best bit will be working together for all those charities with other women.”

Mrs Mathias will also be holding a fundraising event on March 24 at Chippenham RFC, Allington Fields, featuring a Blues Brothers tribute act where there will also be food, a raffle and charity auction.

Tickets are £15 and can be bought from the bar at the Chippenham RFC or by calling Mrs Mathias on 0776 999 6253.
