STUDENTS from Hardenhuish School in Chippenham were left inspired and thinking about a career in engineering following a talk by a renowned author and professor.
More than 60 students from Year 8 to 12 attended talk Keeping Doors Open, which was held by Professor Averil MacDonald OBE, and focussed on how girls can make the most of their talents and for them to consider careers in science, technology and engineering.
Professor MacDonald, author of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) campaign report on science, technology, engineering and maths, talked about career options available to girls who gain a science qualification.
Twenty Year 12 chemistry and physic students were also given a talk by Professor MacDonald on the subject of future energy, and Year 10 pupils were also given a Fantastic Plastic presentation to support their GCSE science curriculum.
David Mayo, Hardenhuish’s curriculum leader for science, said: “This valuable presentation was both thought-provoking and highlighted the importance and benefit of science learning, even where career pathways lead to roles that would not immediately be perceived as utilising these qualifications.”
