A NEW facility which it’s hoped will encourage people to pick up litter and not drop it on the floor in the first place has been placed in Chippenham.

A superbin has been placed near the play area and basketball court in Monkton Park as part of the Love Chippenham anti-litter campaign, which was launched earlier this month.

As well as being a normal looking bin which people can throw their rubbish in, the superbin also has room to store litter picking equipment such as litter pickers, bags, gloves and hoops.

It’s hoped the new facility will encourage people to use the equipment when either going for a short stroll or taking their dog for a walk.

Beverly Walker, from litter picking group Off the Ground, said: “It means if you live in another part of Chippenham you can come to us and ask us for the equipment, you can use it, and then pop it back.

“It means if you take the dog for a walk why not take a litter picker with you as you’re going for a walk anyway and even if it’s only two bottles or two cans it’s better than nothing.”

The superbin, which was funded by the Chippenham Area Board at a cost of £934, is locked with a keypad but volunteers or groups who wish to use the equipment can ask for the code from Off the Ground.

The Love Chippenham anti-litter campaign will end this weekend on Saturday with a group litter pick in the town to coincide with the Great British Spring Clean.
