A CHIPPENHAM dog walker says he is disgusted about the dog mess he keeps finding at a recently opened car park in the town – where no bins are being provided.

The Westmead Open Space car park was opened along Pewsham Way in December by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity as part of a £3million community hub planned for the town.

Dog walkers are being encouraged to use the car park and surrounding area, but resident Graham Macauley is shocked that no bins, either for rubbish or dog poo, have been put there.

The 61-year-old is now worried that the area could become a health and safety hazard unless action is taken.

“I can understand why they have opened it, fantastic, but they spent all that money and it’s getting very heavily used, which is great, but if people are walking their dogs you need bins,” said Mr Macauley, who lives in Waters Edge.

“The problem is the nearest place you can dump it is the other side of Avenue La Fleche where there is a bin, there’s two in Canal Road and one at the bottom of Thomas Mead.

“It’s becoming a health hazard. Me and my wife, Linda-Anne, walk our two springer spaniels there twice a day and it means we have to bring a poo bag back.”

The charity have promised bins will be installed later this month. Chairman Ian Humphrey, said: “Chippenham Borough Lands Charity opened the Westmead Open Space car park some months ago and have been aware of the situation around dog mess.

“As you might expect we work with many partners to improve facilities, for Chippenham including Chippenham Town Council, who have been litter picking on the whole of the Westmead site for the charity.

“We have also just secured through MJ Church a dog bin and they have very kindly agreed to fund the emptying as well as the installation costs as part of their waste management services.

“This will be installed on site within the next month. However we do ask that all members of the public, as responsible citizens, take their rubbish and dog mess home with them.”
