CHIPPENHAM’S Leo Darby who lost his life due to a brain tumour last year will be remembered by his former school when they open a new library.

The 11-year-old, who died on October 19, 2015, after a ten-month battle with the disease, was a pupil at Ivy Lane Primary School where a library will be opened in January containing tributes to Leo.

The youngster had wanted to become an author and had written several poems, one of which will be painted on a wall in the new facility.

There will also be a story-tellers chair with an inscription in memory of Leo and the room will be painted his favourite colours, red, black and yellow.

Leo’s mum, Ros Darby, who has been a governor of the school for eight years, said: “I didn’t know anything about it until just before the summer.

“When I was told there was going to be a story-tellers chair we were quite thrilled.

“Leo loved writing and liked creating characters, he was really imaginative.

“We have seen the work in progress and it’s going to be amazing.

“The school has never really had a dedicated space for a library, it’s always been a desire.”

Money for the library, which has cost almost £20,000, was raised through the school’s parent fund-raising group FOILS with money being donated in memory of Leo, as well as Chippenham Borough Lands who have supported the project.

Headteacher at Ivy Lane Primary School, Chris Cannings, said: “We have had a big emphasis for a few years to try and get children reading for pleasure because the benefits of that are really high.”
