PARKING problems outside a block of flats in Chippenham are getting better thanks to police action, but motorists are still continuing to ignore the warnings say residents.

A number of vehicles were towed away from Louise Rayner Place last month after parking on the pavement and obstructing residents and a bin lorry.

Cones have been put along the pavement and fines handed out to those who ignore them.

Elder Green, who has lived at the block of flats for almost five months, said: “The bin men had not been able to get down and sometimes the parking is so narrow it’s a struggle for us to get out.

“It’s been brilliant since they towed away the vehicles but I think commuters come and target the area every year or so, it’s just a cycle.”

Despite vehicles being towed away and patrols by the police, some residents living along Louise Rayner Place still feel the problem hasn’t been solved as commuters are parking in their reserved spaces during the day.

Anna Hickman, who has lived along the road for a month, said: “People who work in the town park in these spaces as they can’t be bothered paying for parking.

“Most of them probably actually live in Chippenham.

“I couldn’t get into my parking space when I had my baby with me and I have to find additional parking elsewhere. You’re left with nowhere to park.”

PC Les Fletcher said: “Over the last few weeks motorists have had plenty of warnings.

“Anyone who continues to do this risks having their vehicle towed away and paying for the recovery charge. A number of cars have been removed and we will continue to monitor it.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We’d like to thank the police for their help in moving these vehicles. However, we’d like to appeal to people to park considerately, as if our waste collection vehicles can’t pass, emergency vehicles would also be unable to get through.”
