A MAN from Chippenham has been given a suspended sentence for the possession of a class B drug with intent to supply.

Paul Jennings, 32, of no fixed abode, received a 16 week prison sentence suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty at North West Wiltshire Magistrates Court on Thursday (September 8).

Jennings was arrested on February 10 after police officers stopped a black Mazda RX8, of which Jennings was a passenger, on the A4 in Bath Road. Officers detained Jennings after smelling the strong odour of cannabis coming from the car, and after an initial search a bag was found in the foot well with two large bags of cannabis being found inside. Jennings was then arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply, police also seized cash and mobile phones from the car.

Chippenham Sergeant Gareth Edwards said: “The arrest of Jennings came about following information received from members of the public and extensive work carried out by our local Neighbourhood Policing Team officers in conjunction with the Dedicated Crime Team.

Later on the day of arrest, police officers took out a Section 18 search warrant on an address in Royal Close where Jennings admitted to living at the time. During the search officers found a large bag containing more cannabis as well as drug paraphernalia.

As well as the suspended sentence, Jennings was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £80 and court costs of £85.

Sergeant Edwards added: “We rely on community intelligence and would continue to urge members of the public to report any suspected drug activity in their area. We will always follow up information we receive.

“I am satisfied with the sentence handed out to Jennings this week – I hope it sends a clear message to the public that we take all reports relating to drug activity extremely seriously.”
