More than 40 homes in Chippenham are without power after a car drove into an electricity pole bringing down the cables.

The incident happened at 1.37pm this afternoon, when an orange Mini Cooper collided with the pole on Malmesbury Road.

Police and a fire crew from Chippenham attended the scene but no one has been injured.

Malmesbury Road is closed from the A350 roundabout to the Langley Road retail park and people are being warned to avoid the area.

The electricity supply is expected to return around 8pm.

A spokesperson for Southern Electric Power Distribution said: "The power cut along Malmesbury Road in Chippenham is affecting 42 properties.

"We are aiming to have the power restored by 8pm.

"It was caused by a car colliding into our electricity pole and bringing down overhead wires.

"Our apologies for the disruption and inconvenience this power cut is causing our customers."
