ONE of Britain’s most iconic car models was on show this weekend as the Austin Ten Drivers’ Club held their annual meeting in Chippenham for the first time.

Organised by the Wiltshire Moonrakers Group – based in Devizes – 100 Austin 10s were on display at the event which was held at Chippenham Rugby Club over the weekend.

Almost 300,000 Austin 10s were built between 1932-47, with people from across the country converging on Wiltshire to view the very best.

“It was very successful, we had lovely weather and had 100 or so cars, we even had a one couple in period attire,” said Sheila Martin, a member of the organising team and member of the Wiltshire Moonrakers Group.

“Chippenham Rugby Club were very good, very accommodating and it was an ideal venue.

“The cars were judged, we had a small driving test but the main thing was to come along and show off your vehicle.

“There was a good turnout of local people interested in the event and we had people come from all over the country, from Essex and Lincolnshire and even people who live in Holland.”

Mrs Martin’s husband, Peter, has been a member of the Austin Ten Drivers’ Club since it was formed 51 years ago and was at the event with his Austin 10 Cambridge from 1938.

“My parents were the generation that had cars that looked like that, they're very easy to maintain,” he said.
