IT was a special occasion in more ways than one for the 24 Grittleton House School Year 11 pupils who attended their prom last week, as it will be the last one.

Flash cars were the order of the day as the pupils arrived in their best suits and dresses at the school while trying to stay dry in the wet conditions on Wednesday, June 29.

The school announced last month that it would be closing after 65 years, making this year's prom even more significant.

Headteacher Nathan Dawes said: “The whole thing went superbly, it was one of the best we have had and they all looked splendid.

“It was lovely that the students in return awarded teachers with prizes such as the best sports teacher or the loudest.

“There were lots of flashy cars like Aston Martins and a classic American pick-up truck and big stretch limos but it was mostly cars and there were no helicopters.

“Because there are 24 of them it’s personal and they will go on to be lifelong friends.

“We had a do on the Sunday and lots of ex-pupils came back and it was great to see them.

“For obvious reasons it was a little emotional for it to be the last one but I don’t want to take anything away from the other year groups.

“It is sad that we won’t be coming back and doing that again, every day over the last month has been emotional.”
