WEST Country music legends The Wurzels played to hundreds of people at Brinkworth recreational ground at the weekend.

Brinkworth Earl Danby's School Association organised the West Country-themed event, using as many local contractors and as much local produce as possible, and raised nearly £7,000 for the PTA.

Ella Morgan, one of nine mums who organised the event, said: "We thought it would be nice to do something low cost and West Country based to make it informal and relaxed for parents. It is also a good way of meeting up with other people and catching up with friends.

"We were looking at music and we booked Corky and one of the other organisers said why don't we try and book The Wurzels. We all thought 'Oh, my God, we can't book them they are too big for us!'"

But after contacting a number of local firms, who helped sponsor the event, The Wurzels were booked.

The 450 tickets for the event sold out in three weeks and the recreational ground was adorned with bunting with people enjoying local ciders, ales and freshly cooked food from Thomas of Malmesbury butchers.

The event proved so popular that the bar ran out of cider at 10pm and local firms have already committed to taking part next year.

Mrs Morgan said: "The thing I remember the most from the night was looking round the room and seeing so many happy faces all with their hands in the air and singing along to The Wurzels. It was just a bit of magic really.

"We are really delighted that so many local people were able to enjoy this event raising money for our lovely school. This has been a true community event and we are grateful for all the support we have received.”

Thanks were given to a number of Brinkworth firms that supported the day particularly Crapper & Son, WoodMcKeever Agency, Watson Fuels, Horton Contractors, Grange Land Rover, The Old Bell, Dyson and Brinkworth Heritage Society.

The money raised will go towards Earl Danby's lower school playground.
