THERE were smiles and cheers in Chippenham as the town celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a royal themed family fun day.

Organised by Chippenham Town Council, the event witnessed a range of activities for youngsters and their families including assault courses, a display of military vehicles, inflatable football pitches, craft sessions and bouncy castles.

Held in John Coles Park on Sunday between 12-4pm, there was also a vintage tea party organised for the 90-year-olds across the town.

“I think it was very successful, it was weather dependant and we were about as lucky as we could be and it didn’t put too many people off,” said Chippenham Mayor Terry Gibson.

“I didn’t count how many people there were but there were an awful lot of people.

“The tea party was absolutely lovely, the army provided a tent and the mayoress, myself and the chief executive hosted nine people over 90 years of age.

“They were so interesting and I met people from my youth and an ex-mayor.”
