PUPILS from Abbeyfield School are flying high after securing first and second place at the UK’s Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge.

Schools across the country took part in the tenth running of the event, with the winner representing the UK at the international finals where they will compete against nations from around the globe.

Working to strict rules, teams had to design and build a rocket capable of carrying two raw eggs 850 feet into the air and returning them safely to the ground.

Open to young teenagers aged 11-18, the competition is designed to encourage teamwork, creativity and innovation.

North Wiltshire MP, James Gray, said: “Congratulations to Abbeyfield School on reaching first and second place at the National Rocketry Final. The UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge is a great way to encourage our next generation of engineers and scientists and give them hands-on experience.

“I was delighted to see Abbeyfield in this year’s final and am looking forward to them competing in the international final at the Farnborough International Airshow.”

The competition, which was held at Stow Maries Aerodrome, is organised by ADS Group – UK trade organisation for space and aerospace industries.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of ADS Group said: “Congratulations to Abbeyfield School, I wish them all the very best at the national final.

“The UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge gives the next generation of engineers an opportunity to understand complex challenges overcome by engineers working in our industries.

“There is a range of exciting, high-skill and well-paid career opportunities within aerospace and space for young people with strong maths and science qualifications.

“This competition is a great way for young people to engage creatively with these subjects.”

The international final is at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 15.
