A MAN who had spent the weekend helping at Chippenham Folk Festival has died after suffering a suspected heart attack while at the wheel.

The man, understood to be 42-year-old Neil Roberts from Wales, was travelling home with his wife and another passenger when the incident happened near Stoney Gutter, near Trowbridge, on the A350 on Tuesday (May 31) afternoon.

The car, a VW which was towing a caravan, was travelling southbound towards Yarnbrook when it veered across the road while travelling at around 50mph.

It crashed through a hedgerow before it came to a stop.

The two passengers were unhurt.

Seven police cars, two ambulances and Wiltshire Air Ambulance attended the scene.

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called to a patient possibly suffering a stroke or cardiac arrest at 3.50pm.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of ambulance personnel the patient was declared dead at the scene."

Mr Roberts had been a member of the task force at the Chippenham Folk Festival, which was held over the Bank Holiday weekend from Friday Monday (May 27-30).

Festival organiser Bob Berry said: “It’s a great shame, he and his wife Tracey worked for us for a number of years and they worked so hard for us every time.

“He’d been a driver but he wasn’t feeling well this time due to previous short illnesses, so he helped move stuff around.

“I’m most sorry for Tracey and his nearest and dearest.

"He was one of the most likeable characters in the team.

“He’d been coming to us for about five or six years and only got married this past year, it’s a really sad situation.

“He was helpful and never shirked from anything. Whatever he did, he did with all his heart.”

The crash caused traffic chaos. The A350 was closed from Semington roundabout to Stoney Gutter and traffic was diverted through Trowbridge.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We understand that some drivers will have been inconvenienced.

"But our focus is dealing with those people involved directly in the road traffic collision, working alongside our colleagues at the ambulance service as well as our serious collision investigation team who work hard to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, in a timely and safe manner.

“This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim at this difficult time,” the spokesman added.
