Two business partners who run The Bell House Hotel in Sutton Benger appeared on the Channel 4 show Four in a Bed last week.

Chris Williams and Jacqui Hogg’s 14 bed hotel came second in the reality show filmed in October, where four B&B owners stay with each other and pay what they believe to be a fair amount for their experience.

Mr Williams, originally from Barry, said: “There were a number of reasons why we went on the show. We have been doing renovations to the business and we wanted those to be looked at subjectively and we wanted to show the local people what we have been doing for the last few years and of course, we just wanted to have a bit of fun.

“It was a really great experience and having people point out little things that you wouldn’t normally notice yourself is really useful.

“I also loved the diversity of the people on the show and in the industry in general because it makes it different and if you don’t see that and make it work, it would be sad for the little independent places.”

The business partners took over The Bell House Hotel on July 27, 2012 and have been renovating it since.

Mr Williams said: “There is always something to be done with buildings like this, but for us it was just a case of making money and then putting it straight back into the business.

“We both enjoyed the show and had a great time doing it and it also gave us a chance to show off our post office too.”

After the village postmaster decided to retire in March 2014, Mr Williams decided take it on and move the branch to the hotel’s site and add a coffee shop.

Previously, the Welshman also owned a restaurant in Yorkshire which was awarded the best Spanish restaurant in the country.

“We came second in the show and scored very highly for our hosting and breakfast which is great. The other contestants picked up on our water pressure problems which we have sometimes and other general bits and bobs but as a result we have started to look into different bathroom styles.

“We also want to apply for planning permission to add a banquet hall and some more bedrooms so we can give the business more or a future.”

He added that he would guarantee guests would have a great time if they decided to stay at The Bell House Hotel.
