A man who hit his wife on the head in a drunken rage on Christmas was given a community order and offered help with his drinking problem.

Robert Jones, 51, of Pipsmore Road, Chippenham pleaded guilty to assaulting Kerry Jones by beating her on December 24 and April 3, as well as assaulting Odette Garrett on the same day.

North Wiltshire Magistrates heard on Thursday how drinking had been an issue in Jones’ life and it was the reason he hit both the women.

Passing sentence District Judge Simon Cooper said: “There is an obvious pattern between these incidents and his drinking. It is time Mr Jones got help and put all these things behind him.

“We could get him some help and education with drinking and violence in the home and he will also be ordered to do some unpaid work in the community.”
