A rare letter written by HRH Queen Elizabeth detailing how she fell in love with Prince Phillip has been sold at Chippenham Auction Rooms at the weekend for £14,400.

The letter, which was written to the author Betty Shew in 1947, was originally predicted to fetch £800 – £1,200 at auction.

There was interest in the letter from around the world, with buyers on the phone from Canada, the United States and Europe.

Principal Auctioneer Richard Edmonds said: “This is a fantastic result. It was quite an honour to be able to sell such an important document, particularly as the country is celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday.

“The bidding was both online and over eight phone lines. It was pretty fast and furious. At times our internet connection looking like it was lighting up.”

The bidding lasted a grand total of five minutes – lengthy for an auction.
