CHIPPENHAM racing driver Pete Diccox and fellow driver Michael Moyers were lucky to walk away from a 120mph crash at Castle Combe last weekend.

The terrifying high-speed accident occurred during the Formula Ford 1600 race at the Historic Sports Car Club meeting on Saturday.

Mr Moyers had been leading the race when he came across 79-year-old backmarker Mr Diccox as they approached the start/finish line.

“I was about three seconds down on the pace I normally run because of a misfire,” said Mr Diccox, who has raced single-seaters since he was 55-years-old.

“I always drive with my mirrors and I could see them [the leaders] coming before I got into Camp Corner.

“I stayed on my line and one tried to go one side and one on the outside and the next thing I saw was the underside of a car coming over my head.

“I never get scared but it’s a shame it happened, it was something that couldn’t be avoided I suppose.

“The important thing is both me and Michael are okay.

“I was perfectly okay after I got out of the car, I’ve been used to so many bumps in my lifetime but the doctors were very concerned because my blood level was high.”

Mr Moyers had taken pole-position in the first race of the season in his Spectrum 011c and had led every lap up until the crash at the end of lap nine, which was stopped after the accident.

“Considering the size of the accident we both got away pretty lightly really, it could have been a lot worse,” said the 31-year-old, who lives in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.

“We’d reached three-quarters distance and it’s when you start catching backmarkers which is always a little tricky.

“I could see Pete in the distance but the closing speed was a lot faster than I thought and I caught him in the middle of the corner.

“I had two choices, either slam on the brakes or go around the outside and I had to make the decision in a split second.

“I remember the impact which surprised me and all I saw was the sky so I wasn’t aware if I was rolling.

“All I thought was ‘why me?’ as I have raced for over ten years and this was the second big accident I’d had in the last few months.

“I got a bruise on my shoulder and my foot, which happened when it got caught between the brake and throttle pedal.

“It was just unfortunate for everyone.”
