VETERAN drivers took a step back in time at the weekend to commemorate the Historic Sports Car Club's 50th anniversary.

The club recreated the grid of the inaugural Griffiths formula race which took place on May 16, 1966 at Castle Combe race track.

At the Combe event on Saturday original cars from the 1966 race have been tracked down with three of them still in the ownership of the race drivers from 50 years ago.

Among them was the Cotswolds' Bernard Worth, now 83, who raced the red Ferrari 166 Mille Miglia. Joining him on the grid was Ivan Sharrock in a HRG 1500 and Ivan Dussek in a similar car who both took part in their cars in 1966.

Bernard Worth said: "It's good to return this track and appear with my car as I did all those years ago. I bought the car back in June 1960 and have owned it since.”

The trio, along with owners of the other original cars from the first race day, took part in a static grid display where race enthusiasts were able to chat to the entrants.

Later the grid was cleared and the cars completed a parade lap of the track.

When not on track the 50th anniversary cars were on display in a marquee close to the paddock for duration of the two-day event.
