CHILDREN at Langley Fitzurse School were taken back in time last week as they donned helmets and swords as part of a Viking Day.
Roger Barry – better known as Hrothgar – from re-enactment group The Manaraefan Herred, visited the school on Middle Common, Kington Langley, to teach Year 4 pupils about the Vikings and their way of life.
The youngsters witnessed the different techniques used for hunting, Viking weaponry and were shown how to start a fire with flint and wood.
They also took part in Viking stories, re-enacting the battle of Maldon in Essex and crafted their own rock slingers before ending the day with a question and answer session.
Teacher Linda Hunter-Henderson said: “The kids had a fantastic time, it’s the first time I have done it and the emphasis was on Year 4s and teaching them about the Vikings.
“Roger was just amazing, he got them playing Viking games and it was a good day.
“He had the helmet and large tent and he got the children totally absorbed in Viking land.
“A few of them took part in a play and we had some fantastic costumes.”
