THE Blitz spirit has taken hold at Chippenham Auction Rooms this month as medals, gas masks and military uniforms all go on sale.

The forthcoming sale, on November 27 and 28, will feature much of the contents of the War Room and other exhibits from the now closed Yesterday’s World museum in Battle, East Sussex.

It marks one of collectors and enthusiasts’ final opportunities to buy items from the former museum including hundreds of rare enamel signs, shop interiors, vintage toys, advertising and packaging.

Principal auctioneer, Richard Edmonds, said: “We’re still working our way through the museum’s cellar, which is packed with items that haven’t seen the light of day for years.

“The team from Chippenham have spent a lot of time in Battle going through the exhibits and cataloguing everything.

“I particularly enjoyed the War Room, putting on a tin hat and picking my way through the ruined building certainly captured the spirit of the Blitz.”

Yesterday’s World was a museum of British social history featuring exhibits from the 19th and 20th centuries.

In addition to the War Room and other recreated street scenes, exhibits being sold come from a range of early 20th century shops including a pharmacy, cobbler, hosier and butcher.

Items will be available for viewing on November 26 between 4pm and 7pm and November 27 between 10am and 5pm.
